Our Property Tax group, within the Indirect Tax practice, is a leader in the global commercial real estate (CRE) industry. Our dedicated team focuses on helping clients optimize cash flow and mitigate risk by addressing the intricacies of property assessment and taxation. You will play a key role in supporting our clients in relation to both regional and national projects, as well as value-added tax projects associated with property assessment and taxation. Your expertise will be called upon to critically review and evaluate property tax appeal positions, offering informed recommendations and adeptly managing the appeal process in accordance with the firm's rigorous policies, standards, and guidelines.As a Senior Paralegal, you'll work as part of a team of problem solvers, helping to solve complex business issues from strategy to execution. You will lead in delivering strategic property tax advisory services, ensuring clients navigate the complexities of tax obligations with expertise. You will also manage client relationships, oversee appeal processes, and conduct in-depth research and analysis to provide innovative solutions.Your role is not just about analysis; it's about being a part of a team that delivers customized tax strategies within a complex and dynamic regulatory framework. In this role, you will monitor market trends and legislative changes, ensuring our clients are well-informed and can maximize tax recovery potential through all available programs and incentives.
Meaningful work you'll be part of
As a Senior Paralegal, you'll work as part of a team of problem solvers, helping to solve business issues, deliver high quality client service and operational efficiency. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Draft and prepare legal pleadings, motions, and other legal documents in coordination and/or with the support of legal counsel as required
• Collaborate with valuation consultants to train and educate on negotiation strategies
• Centralize and manage communications with third parties, including clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel
• Serve as a signing authority for specified legal documents and ensure all documentation is accurate and compliant with legal standards
• Conduct legal research and gather relevant information to support case strategies Maintain and organize case files, ensuring all documents are up-to-date and easily accessible
• Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
• Provide administrative support to attorneys and other legal professionals as needed
• Stay updated on changes in property tax laws and regulations to ensure compliance
Experience and skills you'll use to solve
• Significant experience in property tax case management, tax litigation, and dispute resolution
• An active paralegal license in the Province of Ontario is required
• A post-secondary degree (or equivalent work experience) in law, real property valuation, property assessment, real estate, urban studies, economics, or finance is preferred
• Strong understanding of approaches to valuation with a focus on communication of complex concepts.
• Strong analytical, communication, drafting and writing skills
• Must be self-motivated with a genuine desire to learn the law and follow case law
• Willingness to participate in team-based initiatives for growth and development and to implement innovation in our delivery of services
• Demonstrated people management and leadership skills, with the ability to coach team members, build strong relationships, and foster collaboration
• Must be digitally enabled/engaged and comfortable with using and learning technology
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage deadlines
• Interest in working collaboratively as part of a team
