The Opportunity:

WSP is seeking a Civil Lead to join our Rail & Transit Team located in Greater Toronto (GTA), overseeing multidisciplinary municipal design projects. The Civil Lead will provide technical expertise, guidance, and leadership within the civil engineering discipline, ensuring the successful execution of engineering and design tasks, adherence to industry standards and regulations, and contributing to the overall success of the rail and transit initiatives.

What you can expect to do here:
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in civil engineering, providing technical leadership and guidance to the project team
  • Oversee the comprehensive scope and design management for roadway, drainage, utilities, and traffic
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager and other Discipline Leads to develop detailed plans for the execution of civil engineering tasks
  • Lead the development and review of engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and specifications for rail and transit projects
  • Ensure all engineering and design activities align with best practices, industry standards, and project requirements
  • Monitor and track progress to ensure timely delivery of high-quality outputs
  • Implement rigorous quality control measures, ensuring all deliverables meet established quality standards and regulatory requirements
  • Manage the allocation of resources and budget for civil engineering tasks. Planning and proactively identifying resource needs and provide justifications for additional support, if required
  • Identify potential risks and challenges specific to civil engineering and develop effective mitigation strategies to avoid delays and cost overruns
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, codes, and industry standards
  • Establish clear communication channels with project stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and other relevant parties. Provide updates on progress and address any technical concerns or inquiries
  • Prepare technical analyses and designs, technical reports, construction cost estimates, contract specifications/documentation, and review shop drawings
  • Manage and coordinate field inspections of engineering designs and liaise with team members, clients, and agencies
  • Oversee the development and review of Basis of Design documents for civil discipline, Level of Development (LOD) for BIM-enabled design, combined services drawings, engineering reports, and specifications
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include working outside of normal work hours

What you'll bring to WSP:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited university; a master's degree is desirable
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in the province of Ontario
  • 10-15 years of experience of leading and managing engineering teams in the context of alternate delivery projects for municipal, provincial and/or federal clients, preferably within the rail and transit sector
  • In-depth knowledge of civil engineering principles, standards, and best practices
  • Familiarity with applicable regulations, codes, and safety standards in the rail and transit industry, environmental and other relevant regulatory bodies permitting process including compliance with City of Toronto and municipal projects
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to facilitate effective collaboration and coordination within the discipline and across project teams
  • Proficiency in relevant engineering software and tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Water/Sewer GEMS, EPANET)
  • Good technical writing skills and command of the English language, both written and verbal
  • Must possess sound judgment, strong organizational, administrative, observational, and problem-solving skills
  • A vehicle and a valid driver's license will be required
  • Offers of employment for safety-sensitive positions involving fieldwork are contingent upon candidates being able to perform key physical tasks of the job, which may include working in a variety of environmental conditions

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with rail and transit projects is considered an asset.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience, competence in clear, concise, and tactful communication with senior management, clients, peers, and staff.
  • Strategic, conceptual analytical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Adaptability and flexibility include the ability to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity, and change.
  • Experience in a Consulting Engineering environment is an asset.
