The Opportunity - Build the Future with Us
What if you could lead the approvals strategy that enables complex mining projects to move forward-while protecting water resources and meeting evolving regulatory expectations?

As a Senior Environmental Permitting & Approvals Consultant (Mine Water / Mining), you will play a critical leadership role within WSP's Mining Environmental Approvals team. You will lead and deliver permitting and approvals workstreams for Ontario metal mining projects, applying strong professional judgment, regulatory credibility, and a practical approach to water quality and water management. In doing so, you will help strengthen how we consistently deliver high-quality approvals outcomes for our clients-while mentoring and developing the next generation of technical leaders.

Locations: Hamilton, Burlington, Mississauga, Toronto (Hybrid)
Your Impact
  • Lead environmental permitting and approvals for operating and proposed metal mines in Ontario, with primary accountability for water management and water quality components.
  • Direct the preparation of permit and approval applications and supporting technical documentation, including environmental management and monitoring plans.
  • Review project plans and technical studies to identify approvals risks, data gaps, and mitigation or monitoring requirements related to surface water and groundwater.
  • Advise clients and internal teams on regulatory requirements, interpretation, and strategy to resolve approvals challenges efficiently and defensibly.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary inputs-including hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, aquatic sciences, and engineering-into cohesive approvals deliverables.
  • Support project delivery through leadership on scope, schedule, budget, quality, and resourcing for approvals workstreams.
  • Lead or support engagement with regulators, stakeholders, and Indigenous communities, ensuring technical clarity and responsiveness.
  • Mentor and develop junior and intermediate staff through coaching, technical review, and on-the-job learning.
The Skills That Set You Apart
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, hydrogeology, or a related discipline (post-graduate degree is an asset).
  • Typically 8-12+ years of progressive experience in mining or environmental approvals, ideally within a consulting environment serving private-sector clients.
  • Strong technical depth in water quality assessment methods, monitoring programs, data interpretation, and reporting for mining projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with Ontario and Federal regulatory regimes applicable to metal mining approvals.
  • Proven ability to lead technical workstreams, exercise sound professional judgment, and deliver high-quality work within budget and schedule.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build trust across multidisciplinary teams, clients, and regulators.
  • Assets include wastewater treatment or industrial processes, inorganic chemistry, contaminant transport and mass balance modelling, assimilation capacity studies, and hydrodynamic modelling (e.g., CORMIX).
