Job Description

We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our Prevention Practice, Quality and Engineering department. You're a professional engineer with substantial industry experience who will work with prevention officers and other occupational health and safety professionals towards making a difference in the safety of workers in British Columbia.

Our Prevention Practice, Quality & Engineering department provides expert technical advice and direction to WorkSafeBC on matters relating to the field of engineering and safety research. We make recommendations and provide opinions to WorkSafeBC to improve occupational health and safety in B.C. workplaces. Your project-based work will include: participating in the investigation of fatal and serious incidents to determine cause; providing expert technical advice regarding the safe design, use, maintenance, and operation of machinery, chemicals, and processes; evaluating standards; and disseminating technical information.

You will ideally have expertise in tunneling, ventilation, mobile equipment and machine guarding.

Where you'll work
At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.
  • Provide engineering advice to internal stakeholders and determine required corrective or preventative actions where necessary
  • Provide expert technical advice in the development of regulations and guidelines
  • Participate in the investigation of fatal and serious incidents to determine cause
  • Review engineering documentation for compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and applicable standards
  • Represent WorkSafeBC on federal, provincial or inter-provincial working groups or committees for the purpose of developing standards, industrial practices, and procedures
  • Provide expert technical advice and evidence at inquests, or as required, to substantiate orders, penalty actions, prosecutions or appeal hearings
  • Maintain your technical excellence in your field of engineering and expertise
  • Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.
We're looking for people who can:
  • Lead, coach, and mentor work teams
  • Conduct investigations, identify hazards, and develop solutions
  • Clearly present technical and non-technical information in written and verbal formats to explain decisions, policies, regulations, and standards to internal stakeholders
  • Work autonomously within WorkSafeBC policies and regulations
  • Provide expert knowledge of mechanical engineering and related processes
  • Use Microsoft Word and Excel
Your background and experience
  • A qualified, professional engineer either registered or eligible for registration in B.C. (if from out of province)
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience as a P.Eng. in mechanical engineering
  • Preferred experience in tunneling, ventilation, mobile equipment and machine guarding.
We'll consider equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Salary: $53.08 - $68.61/hourly or $100,062.44 - $129,337.57/ yearly
