Principal Design Project Manager

WSP is searching for a Lead Design Project Manager, to take the reins on the prestigious Centre Block project in our nation's Capital. Reporting to the Lead Program Director, this role (equivalent to a Lead Design Manager) is an invitation to be part of something monumental. Your role will not only involve project design and leadership, but will also play a key part in stakeholder communications, design schedule planning, and delivery of one of the most iconic engineering projects in Canadian history.

WSP-through Centrus, a joint venture-is leading the design for the largest heritage rehabilitation project in Canada's history. Over the next 8 years, Centre Block will be renovated to repair and replace various crucial components of the building, influencing the way the Parliament works for the next 100 years.

The Centre Block Rehabilitation Project

The Centre Block is our most iconic heritage building and a symbol of Canadian democracy. The building contains the House of Commons and Senate Chambers, as well as offices for MPs, senators and senior administrators.

Over the next 8 years, the building will be renovated to repair and replace crumbling mortar, aging water pipes and outdated mechanical electrical and safety systems, to install communications and security systems to meet the needs of the 21 st century, and to ensure the building is seismically stable. In addition, a new visitor centre will be constructed to improve visitor experience and enhance security on the iconic site.

The Challenge

Ottawa is in a major seismic zone, which will present a significant technical challenge for our structural team faced with the complete seismic stabilization of a building of such size and historical importance without impacting any of its functions or heritage integrity. There are also many challenges with respect to the upgrading of IT, mechanical and electrical infrastructure, communications and security systems which will have to be delicately threaded through the historical structure.

The entire project is being designed and constructed using BIM and the model, which allows real-time virtual reality design and testing. The delivery method is an integrated project office that brings together all stakeholders in one place through which communication, decision-making and problem-solving are expected to improve.
