Reporting to the Operations Manager, Libraries and Academic Success, the incumbent is responsible for providing a broad range of services within the library that support teaching and learning, as well as, support strategic priorities of Georgian College and Libraries and Academic Success. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Delivering information and reference services to students and faculty across all academic program areas, online and in-person through a variety of platforms (email, chat functions, video chat)
  • Designing simple and complex search strategies to support the Georgian community's information queries, facilitating in-depth reference interviews to broaden or narrow search criteria and retrieving appropriate resources from a variety of print and electronic information sources critical to the research needs of the client
  • Responding to client (student or faculty) research questions from other Ontario colleges through askON (a collaboration of Ontario college libraries that provides real-time, interactive chat)
  • Describing hierarchies of evidence and information in academic literature (primary/secondary) qualitative/quantitative information, (schools) of information (nursing literature versus medical), ability to shift from medical to technological to humanities sources through navigating subscription databases (100 )
  • Incorporating digital tools to engage and support student learning within the reference interaction/interview
  • Troubleshooting basic database issues and reporting instances of technical difficulties
  • Participating in Library and provincial working groups to maintain and advance skills and knowledge regarding all Library resources and service operations
  • Scheduling reference shifts (online and in-person)
  • Conducting library service workshops (in person and online) to academic program areas
  • Evaluating effectiveness of orientations and recommending enhancements and adjusting content in consultation with Faculty Librarian (s) and Operations Manager, to improve student learning experience
  • Assists in the development of tutorials and pathfinders in collaboration with Faculty Librarian(s)
  • In collaboration with Faculty Librarian(s), developing, maintaining and purchasing collection materials (physical, electronic, streaming etc.) within allotted budget that support academic program quality and accreditation requirements
  • Preparing collection profiles and online subject LibGuide(s)
  • Assisting faculty with resource review(s) to support their teaching and learning outcomes by providing a list of reference materials available specific to their academic subject requirements
  • Providing Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services to students and faculty
  • Maintaining currency and knowledge with copyright information and Georgian's copyright procedure
  • Investigating new library service initiatives, digital tools, emerging technologies and platforms that support Georgian academic programming, including gathering information, analysing data, beta testing, designing and demonstrating new tools to staff, students and faculty and marketing the new service tool(s)
  • Creating and maintaining web applications, using general application software for databases, documents, presentations and spreadsheets.
  • Developing and maintaining tracking systems for qualitative and quantitative data (gathering, compiling and summarizing related to library services)
  • Performing circulation transactions using an automated integrated Library Services Platform, familiar with ONEcard, including registering clients, signing materials in and out and placing holds
  • Creating, organizing and participating in Libraries and Academic Success promotion activities

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to Library and Information Technician
  • A minimum of two years' experience in an academic learning environment performing duties to support the teaching, research, and learning of students and faculty; understanding the academic cycle and the corresponding information needs of the campus community
  • Experience working in a library setting providing research services in a variety of subject areas, library orientation, collections management, and circulation preferred
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with:
    • Subscription databases
    • LibGuides (or equivalent) application software
    • Social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
    • Online tutorial and video development
    • Screen sharing and screen capture software
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • AODA and web related standards and guidelines
  • Proven communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated customer service experience with the ability to problem solve
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours (evening and weekends)
  • Experience in an academic library and cataloguing are assets
  • Experience with a student information system (i.e. Banner) and or a learning management system (i.e. Blackboard) is an asset
