The d eveloper contributes to the completion of project deliverables and is accountable for the analysis, design, development , unit testing , implementation, and support of applications to ensure and/or maintain alignment with the Lines of Business (LOBs) strategies. U nderstands data in terms of its business and technical lifecycle (Create, Read , Update, and Delete), technical underpinnings of database theories (e.g. structured, unstructured), and various data modelling concepts in both the logical and physical domains. Assists in creation, implementation/installation, configuration, change, and support of data models, databases, data marts, data warehouses. Administers and documents data backup and recovery plans, capacity plans and security plans. Assists in planning and participates in tests for new products and data technology releases to ensure features and functions are acceptable and integrated across systems software and platforms. Proactively investigates/troubleshoots database, technical and systems problems and directs/assures corrective action. Identifies and recommends process or system changes to avoid issues/problems. 24/7 duty may be required.

  • Writes code according to accepted standards based on user requirements, which are included in the delivery of the application solution, to meet the business need.
  • Build frameworks and automation scripts to accelerate development of common coding patterns.
  • Decomposes business requirements and translates them into detailed design specifications and code.


  • Create and maintain appropriate artefacts / documentation .
  • Support implementation activities in order to promote the application into the production environment in preparation for the user community .
  • Supports production issues, includes independently completing root-cause analysis and diagnosis.
  • Devises new algorithms and data structures for target environment and platform attributes in alignment with architectural patterns.
  • Builds solutions that are supportable, scalable and achieve our aspiration of common assets.


  • Lead in project and team meetings interacting and collaborating with team members and other departments, when appropriate, to provide development perspective in the meetings and to contribute to the timely delivery, design, and quality of various work artifacts adhering to standards .
  • Acquires end-to-end knowledge of assigned applications from existing documentation, application code, subject matter experts, and/or other application artifacts in order to identify and recommend technical improvement opportunities to senior management (i.e., Senior Manager, Platform Development, Technology Relationship Manager, Development Manager, and Technology Head) .
  • Contribute to software development process improvement activities .
  • Identifies opportunities to strengthen the development capability, such as: sharing expertise to promote technical development, mentoring employees, building communities of practice and networks.
  • Stays abreast of industry technical and business trends through participation in professional associations, practice communities & individual learning.


  • Focus is primarily on business/group within BMO; may have broader, enterprise-wide focus.
  • Provides specialized consulting, analytical and technical support.
  • Exercises judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules.
  • Works independently and regularly handles non-routine situations.
  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Typically, between 2 - 5 years of relevant experience and/or certification in IT or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of software development practices, concepts, and technology obtained through formal training and/or work experience.
  • Knowledge of required programming languages and can code with little oversight.
  • Knowledge of technical/business environment and processes.
  • Understand functional aspects and technical behavior of the underlying operating system, development environment, and deployment practices.


  • Have facility with and understanding of the ecosystem that code operates in.


  • Must have 2 + years of ETL development .
  • Must have 2 + years of SQL .
  • Experience with unix / linux scripting .


  • Experience with ETL/ELT .
  • Experience with SSIS , Spark .
  • Experience in Data warehousing .
  • Exposure to AWS, Hadoop, Netezza .
